Grapes and Pears and Peanuts, oh my!

Last week's market was our first monthly market and boy was it a success. We had six farmers come out and set up with a variety of fresh produce, delicious honey, boiled peanuts, and some beautiful mums. Three of these farmers were new to our market and we were so grateful to have them join our team! Welcome Jessica Wilson, the Browns, and Maters & Taters!

The market was filled with lots of color and some Caribbean music this week to help brighten up a cloudy day. But the weather certainly didn't stop us from having a great time and selling lots of local goodies. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our farmers!

The sample this week was Creamy Grape Salad with Candied Walnuts and we used yummy muscadine grapes grown right over in Wilmington! It doesn't get much better than that. If you were lucky enough to snag any of these delicious grapes we suggest you give this recipe a try for yourself. Maybe as a side dish at dinner this week or even as an appetizer or dessert to a party or event this weekend. You can find the recipe, and all other market recipes from this year, at http://go.ncsu.edu/2014marketrecipes

Our next market will be Thursday, October 16th and we will be featuring apples, sweet potatoes, and mums. I've heard there will be more delicious honey and maybe a few other special goodies so make sure you stop by to see what these items are!

One Week Out

In just one week from today we will be back in front of the complex cafeteria for another great market! We have invited all of our farmers to come back out and even some new farmers to bring you all a variety of fresh, local produce and herbs. Featuring grapes, pears, and peanuts we will definitely have those on hand and will have some great samples using these foods. Recipes will be available as usual at http://go.ncsu.edu/2014marketrecipes and there will be a raffle prize. We are excited for another week of fun and food and we hope that you will join us from 11am-1pm. See you there!

New Market Schedule

As of September 4th, the market will be held monthly for the remainder of the year, continuing to provide farmers and families the opportunity to connect with fresh, locally-grown foods for healthy meals.

The market will be open to the public on Thursday, Sept. 25; Thursday, Oct. 16; Tuesday, Nov. 25 and Tuesday, Dec. 23. Farmers will continue to offer seasonal produce on these dates in front of the cafeteria at the Brunswick County Government Complex, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and we will continue to offer samples and raffle prizes.

Each market will focus on different seasonal foods, including samples of ways to cook those items. The Sept. 25 market will feature grapes, pears and peanuts, while the Oct. 16 market will feature apples, sweet potatoes and mums. The Nov. 25 market will feature collards and sweet potatoes, and the Dec. 23 market will feature greens, apples, sweet potatoes and Christmas herbs.

The Bolivia Brief will resume weekly operation early next spring, with an opening date announced closer to the time. All farmers wishing to participate in the market at no charge should contact the Cooperative Extension office (Morgan or Mark) 910-253-2610.

We'd like to thank all of our farmers and community members that came out at any point this past season and we look forward to seeing you all again on September 25th!
